Listed on the ASX in 1983, Astron Corporation has more than thirty years’ experience in mineral sands processing, technology and downstream product development, as well as the marketing and sale of zircon and titania (titanium dioxide) products.

Astron’s prime focus is the development of the large, long-life Donald Rare Earth & Mineral Sands project in the Murray Basin, Victoria. The Donald project represents a major new source of global supply in mineral sands, and is one of the largest known zircon and titanium resources in the world. Life of mine for stage one is approximately 40 years.

Astron are now recruiting for the critical role of Health and Safety Superintendent.

About the Role

Initially reporting to the GM Sustainability in Melbourne, this role will transition to site and report to the General Manager Operations. The Health and Safety Superintendent will shape the development and implementation of Astron’s safety systems and set the tone for the future safety culture.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Development, implementation and assurance of H&S management systems and tools.
  • Development and implementation of a strong health and safety culture.
  • Provision of H&S management support to project activities, in both development and construction phases.
  • Deliver initial project risk assessment and subsequent project/contractual H&S documentation within required contractual milestones thereby facilitating and enabling project commencement.
  • Facilitate project specific risk workshops, statutory and process gap analysis, management plan development.
  • Manage and report weekly on the effective closeout of audit actions, incident actions, improvement opportunities and non-conformances.
  • Build organisation capability by through coaching, training programs and the continual advancement in H&S knowledge across the entire team.
  • Undertake incidents investigations as required and ensuring that the Lessons Learned are captured and communicated.
  • Ensure contractors are meeting the H&S requirements defined in the contract and that site access is controlled and managed
  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality specialist services on site.

About You

In order to be successful in this role, you will have significant experience in a site-based health and safety leadership role, in a mining environment. Experience working with Victorian safety legislation is highly desirable, as is exposure to integration systems implementation.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in occupational hygiene, workplace safety, engineering or related field or the equivalent relevant experience.
  • Accredited Lead Auditor and Lead Investigator qualifications
  • ICAM or similar qualification in workplace investigations methodology
  • Knowledge of Victorian and federal Health, Safety & Environment Laws (and subsequent regulations), standards, and safety in mining best practices
  • Proven leadership and influencing skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing and interfacing effectively with cross-functional internal groups of all levels and competencies.
  • Proven contractor and consultant management experience
  • Ability to travel.
