Gerard has a long association with the Astron group. He was an executive director of the group’s parent entity from November 1985, transitioning to a non-executive director role in December 2011. Gerard is a qualified lawyer who became a partner of Perth law firm Lavan & Walsh (later becoming Phillips Fox Perth). He has more than 30 years’ experience in commercial contracting, mining law, and corporate and ASX compliance. He was previously a member of the Australian Mining and Petroleum Lawyers Association. In 1974, Gerard became involved in a pro bono capacity in the management of St. John Ambulance, Western Australia’s sole, state-wide ambulance service. He was chair of its Board of Directors from 2000 until 2016. The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia awarded Gerard membership of the Order of Australia in 2019.
