Marcelo Bastos

Non-Executive Director

Marcelo was appointed a non-executive director of Astron Limited on 1 July 2026. A uniquely accomplished mining executive and non-executive director, he has more than 40 years’ experience in the mining industry. His experience includes major project development, operations, logistics, and senior leadership roles across the globe, including iron ore, gold, copper, nickel, zinc, coal, and mineral sands.

A proven leader, he has held senior executive roles with accountability for operations, marketing, safety, stakeholder engagement, and growth. Marcelo served as Chief Operating Officer of MMG Limited, with responsibilities across four continents, and as a member of many of its boards. Previously, at BHP, he was CEO and President of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, President of BHP Nickel West, and President of Cerro Matoso Nickel. Earlier, with Brazilian mining company Vale, he served as Director of Non-Ferrous Operations, and General Manager of Iron Ore at the Carajás Iron Ore Complex. In these roles he led the development, operation, and expansion of world-class global mining and mineral processing operations.

He is a non-executive director of Anglo American, Aurizon Holdings, and IGO Limited. He has also served as non-executive director of Iluka Resources, Golder Associates, and OZ Minerals. Marcelo holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with Honours from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, and an MBA from Fundação Dom Cabral, Brazil. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and was a member of the Western Australia Chamber of Mines and Energy and Vice President of the Queensland Resources Council.
